"Share Your Interests In Health" Here is your blog
Dietitians have long recommended regular mealtimes for their patients. Satchidananda Panda, an assistant professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, now has laboratory data backing up this idea. His study, published in a November issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that mice on a regular feeding schedule have much more efficient metabolisms than critters who are allowed to eat whenever they want.
Panda let one group of mice eat freely throughout the 24-hour day while another group was fed on a rigid schedule. The second group fasted for 16 hours a day, but both groups of mice ate the same amount of calories for two weeks. Then he did gene scans on the mice to see what was going on in their livers.
In the mice on the uncontrolled feeding schedules, food metabolism genes in the liver were chaotic because the mice were frequently eating and nibbling. Overall, nearly 3,000 liver genes involving in burning fat and sugar were expressed in the freely-eating mice throughout the day.
While it might seem advantageous to have thousands of calorie-burning genes running throughout the day, this makes metabolism less efficient and can create a byproduct that attacks and breaks down DNA, Panda says.
By contrast, the mice on a controlled feeding schedule had a much more consistent pattern of liver gene expression. When feeding, the mice burned sugar, but fat-burning didn't occur until several hours after they had begun fasting.
Panda says the research supports the idea that people should abstain from eating eight to 12 hours each day. Panda's research also suggests that it's possible to reset the body's metabolism simply by changing mealtimes (and fasting periods) and sticking to them. The study results convinced Panda to eat only between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. He eats whatever he wants--with a focus on nutritious foods--and says he's lost weight since he started the regimen a year ago.
Hello Gabi, this below is what I agree with the most...
Panda's research also suggests that it's possible to reset the body's metabolism simply by changing mealtimes (and fasting periods) and sticking to them.
Hello Jennifer, this is an article that Gabi found and shared with us. I was just commenting my thoughts on it. I dont really think too deep about things I read and my comments are my thoughts on what stood out to me see. :-)
There are several ways in which stress can contribute to weight gain. One has to do with cortisol, a stress hormone. When we’re under stress, the fight or flight response is triggered in our bodies, leading to the release of various hormones. Whether we're stressed because of constant, crazy demands at work or we're really in danger, our bodies respond like we're about to be harmed and need to fight for our lives (or run like heck). To answer this need, we experience a burst of energy, shifts in metabolism and blood flow, and other changes.
According to fitness author, Mike Geary, this really unique spice beats abdominal fat.
It is one of the most overlooked, but healthiest spices in the world...
You might even call it a "fat burning spice"... in a roundabout way.
And yes, it can actually help you win the battle against abdominal fat if you use it daily...I'll explain why.
Mike explained to me that this miracle spice has many other benefits too:
*controls blood sugar levels *helps maintain insulin sensitivity *a very powerful antioxidant *may have antibacterial and antifungal properties *and dozens of other benefits
So what is this miracle spice?
Well... it's good old tasty Cinnamon!
Although cinnamon does not directly increase fat burning (such as by increasing metabolic rate, etc), it CAN actually help you to burn off abdominal fat and get leaner through an indirect link.
Here's how Mike explained it to me...
Although cinnamon has dozens of health benefits, the main benefit that will help you to get leaner is through it's strong effect on controlling blood sugar levels in your body.
In a study published in 2003 in the medical journal Diabetes Care, groups were split into people taking 1, 3, or 6 grams of cinnamon per day in capsule form (the equivalent of approx 1/4th to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon).
The results of the study showed that all 3 amounts of cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose levels by 18-29% after 40 days.
Cinnamon can also increase insulin sensitivity, which essentially means that it is helping your body to control blood sugar while simultaneously allowing your body to produce less insulin.
As you know, chronically high insulin levels can make your body pack on the blubber.
How to harness this to lose more fat...
One possible way to benefit from cinnamon to lose more fat is to use cinnamon daily in your meals when you can, such as in yogurt or cottage cheese, in smoothies, oatmeal, or anything else you can think of where it would go well.
Also, you could use a cinnamon capsule before each of your meals.
This could help to control blood sugar and insulin response from your meals and thereby control your appetite and cravings throughout the day... hence, helping you to lose body fat more effectively over time.
So now you can see that not only is cinnamon a powerful antioxidant that can help you stay youthful longer, it can also help you to control blood sugar and get a leaner body!
But I dont drink coffee now!!!!! sounds interesting. but, might try somtime :-) Have you tried that before? I can see maybe in a capaccino which is what I order when I do. MMM thats sounding good now
Yes, I put cinnamon in my coffee! It's yummy. At home we drink the Jose Vanilla nut coffee from Trader Joes, so since that is already vanilla flavored I don't put cinnamon in it. Might still be good tho...hmmm..but when I get a cup of coffee out, I always get plain coffee and put cinnamon in it. I'm going to have cottage cheese today w/ flax and cinnamon.
Gabi, can you post what you showed me?

Ok, sounds good. So how do you put it into practice? Is this your next secret weapon, Lanea?
